Westvleteren: a rare beer to be earned

While Orval is a legend to be shared, Westvleteren is a secret that must be earned ! Often crowned "the world’s best beer" it is as rare as a hidden treasure.

At Saint Sixtus Abbey, time does not move at the market’s pace, but to that of the Rule of Saint Benedict. Here, there are no flashy labels on the bottle; only the capsule reveals the colour of the experience that awaits you…

at least until 2022. After more than 75 years, what made them unique has changed: the bottle is now adorned with a label. A historic move, dictated not by marketing, but by the demand for transparency that the modern world imposes.

Here, you can still enjoy it in its original form, without a label. A version that time is slowly erasing, and which few will have the chance to experience…

Brewing to live, not to sell

The story begins in 1831, when monks settled in the woods of Vleteren. Very soon, the brewery was established, not to conquer the world, but to provide for the community’s needs. “We are not brewers, we are monks,” they like to remind us. A philosophy that explains why production remains deliberately limited, as they produce only what is necessary for the life of the monastery. It is this scarcity, combined with unchanging expertise, that has forged its legend. No marketing, no social media, just word of mouth from connoisseurs with a passion for perfection.

The magic words: ‘Trappist Platter’

Westvleteren plays the discretion card right to the very end… Did you know that to secure a legendary wooden case at the abbey, it can sometimes take weeks of patience and a registered number plate?

But we’re offering you an exclusive shortcut. The password to gain access? “Trappist Platter”.

It’s the only way to enjoy it here! Whenever you order a Trappist Platter, you have the privilege of pairing your cheeses with this exceptional beer. By enjoying it at the Ultieme Hallucinatie, you simply bypass the longest queue in Belgium !

And just like its cousin from Orval, Westvleteren is a charity beer. Every sip supports the abbey’s charitable works and the upkeep of this place of tranquillity.

Now that you know the secret, all you have to do is say the magic word on your next visit !
